The idea of starting a school for police officers’ children was conceived in the early 1960s. However, it was not until 1991 when the then Commissioner of police, the late Mr. Philip Kilonzo began implementing the idea. On 30th May 1991, the first steering committee was formed. Its first Chairman was a former Senior Deputy Commissioner of Police, Hon. Elijah Sumbeiywo. On December 30th, 1992, the first Principal Mr. Willie M. Mugoh was posted to the school. Utumishi Academy is one of the original 18 national schools. It remains among the dream schools for many boys in this country to date. I wish to mention a few of the things that make this academy unique.
