About Us

The idea of starting a school for police officers’ children was conceived in the early 1960s. However, it was not until 1991 when the then Commissioner of police, the late Mr. Philip Kilonzo began implementing the idea. On 30th May 1991, the first steering committee was formed. Its first Chairman was a former Senior Deputy Commissioner of Police, Hon. Elijah Sumbeiywo. On December 30th, 1992, the first Principal Mr. Willie M. Mugoh was posted to the school. He was soon followed by twelve teachers. On 26th January, 1993 the school admitted its first 80 boys and girls. not been completed. Students used timber structures in the Anti Stock Theft Unit Police lines as the boys’ dormitory and the school dining hall. The school soon outgrew the facilities the primary section could offer and so in January 1995, the school was moved to the incomplete complex structures. Except for the brief period between April 1994 and October 1997, when construction had stalled, the school has steadily grown in terms of physical facilities and in the students’ academic performance. After Mr. Mugoh proceeded on transfer, Mr. Peters Orega took over as the new school head. Mr. Orega has since retired and the new Principal is Dr. Samuel G. Maina.

A Message from the Principal

Utumishi Academy is one of the original 18 national schools. It remains among the dream schools for many boys in this country to date. I wish to mention a few of the things that make this academy unique. As Aristotle once said educating the mind without educating the heart is no education at all. At Utumishi we strive to give attention to both academics and key non-academic issues like life skills (done through small family units within the school). The school curriculum is wide enough to even equip a number of learners with skills they can make sure of immediately after school e.g. in Drawing and Design, Power Mechanics, Electricity, Computer Studies, Agriculture, Aviation, Music, French, German, Art & Design and Metal work. To add on the above our middle name has remained disciplined. This we have jealously guarded. With the above conducive environment, the school has continually posted impressive grades and we continue to aim even higher. Utumishi Academy has not only mentored great Kenyans serving in all cadres in this world but our teachers have also benefited from the mentorship process in this academy. We have many Deputy Principals and Principals serving in many other schools that had Utumishi as their springboard. I gladly report that I was also nurtured in the same environment. May I remind our students that you will never get another chance in life to be in school, only memories. I challenge you to make your future better by utilizing the expensive and well equipped school. I wish to sincerely appreciate all our staff (both teaching and non-teaching staff) for being so committed. In a special way I salute the two deputies Mt. Ruru and Mr. Kanyi for their consistency in sacrificing their time and even resources when duty calls. To our Sponsors, Parents, TSC and MOE, I wish to reassure you that we will give you value for all your input.

From Chairman Board Of Management

A Message from the Chairman

MR.JAPHET KOOME, AIG, EBS, HSC, ndc [K] PRINCIPAL DEPUTY TO DIG-KPS I wish to earnestly thank the Almighty God for having brought us this far as an institution and as a family – Utumishi Boys Academy Family. May I now take this opportunity to commend our 2018 candidates for excellent performance in the national examination; it is worth noting that despite the large number of candidates presented for the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education, the school still managed to produce exemplary results. To the class of 2019, this performance is a challenge to you. The standards have already been set high and we do not expect anything less from you. If anything, we expect even better performance. I hope that you will commit yourself to your studies and actualize your dreams. Utumishi Boys Academy has acquired a remarkable reputation for high quality education, closely linked to employment and entrepreneurship, in which we take great pride. Excellence is evident not just in the academic field, but also in co-curricular and extracurricular activities which is a crucial part of education that will inspire young people to raise their act, reach for the stars and aspire for excellence in whatever field they desire to venture. I would like to express my appreciation first, to the Chief Principal, teachers and support staff for their exemplary vigor and dedication that they have all exhibited. Secondly, to the Board of Management, ably assisted by the Parents Teachers Association. Their dedication, drive and high standards have ensured that the school remains a vibrant and a caring community, drawn from a wide social mix, dedicated to shared values and developing well-educated and responsible young citizens on whom this Country’s future depends. Finally, I wish to convey my compliments to the founders of the school who laid very strong foundations and that is why the school stands steadfast delivering high quality education and developing a high sense of responsibility amongst the students. I urge all of us, the Board of Management, the Parents Association, the teachers, the support staff and the students to unite and continue reinforcing the good history of Utumishi Boys Academy. I also welcome the support of alumni and all people of goodwill to support the continuing process of propelling Utumishi Academy into greater heights of success
